SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) can be a bit tricky for beginners. But it doesn’t have to be, and this is what this piece is all about. It might interest you to know that SEO hasn’t really changed over the years; at least the basics are still the same. However, the same methods applied over the last twenty years, if applied now, will not bring you the same results. This means that the core of the process, i.e., Google’s algorithm, which determines your SEO fortunes, has gotten smarter.

Even at that, you can still get the best out of your SEO campaigns if you stick to some simple tips. And we will be discussing three of them in this article. Now, let’s get to it.

1. Who do you consult?

Not everyone that claims the title – SEO experts really has all the expertise required to have a successful SEO campaign. So, the first thing is to find a competent and versatile SEO consultant who has what it takes to drive your SEO campaign. While at it, you will most likely find three groups of SEO experts.

  • Technical Gurus

This set of SEO experts include the website developers that can help you optimise your website and provide internal linking strategies to ensure that search robots understand your website’s contents.

  • Contents Experts

This group includes the copywriters, and content writers who provide keyword-rich contents for your website to enhance your visibility on search engine queries results.

  • Marketing SEO Experts

This type of experts deals with companies and organisations, with the aim of helping them redefine their marketing goals and strategy through SEO. A Marketing SEO expert will be more interested in your buyer persona, avatar, or who your ideal client is. With this information, they can help you to understand the words that your ideal customers are using to search for your products or services on Google, through a process called Keyword Research.

Keywords are the words or phrases your customers are using every day on Google to find your products and services.

So, a competent SEO expert must be a blend of these three SEO professional sub-groups. And you must strive to find one.

2. Understanding Google Algorithm

Let’s start by explicitly saying that Google doesn’t offer an in-depth analysis of how its algorithm works. What they offer is guidelines, and nothing more. Google considers such information as a secret, which if revealed, can affect how their search engines operate. However, Google offered clear explanations on two main factors – relevancy and popularity.

Popularity means Google ranks, sometimes, according to how popular a suit/website/page is. They believe that a website that is more popular than the other must definitely have more valuable contents. The other factor is Relevancy, which Google describes as its interest in providing the searcher with the best results. Interestingly, how you rank, as per relevancy, depends on your keywords. How relevant are the words used in your product or service to the searcher?

Improving your Popularity and Relevancy

Two methods can improve popularity. The first is by getting online reviews on your website and your Google listings, especially if you are a local business. Google will rank you higher if you get a lot of positive feedback and outcomes from clients. The second is back links – the links from other websites pointing back to you. So, if you have your website links on several other websites, which can be used to get back to yours, Google will most likely regard you as popular, and thus rank you higher. So, it is important that your SEO strategy incorporate back links. You can check out our YouTube Channel for more information on this.

Relevancy, on the other hand, can be improved by using the right keywords on your website. Note that you do not determine what keywords are best for you. The best way to identify the right keywords is to get into the mind of your ideal customer and know how they think. This is not about you or what you are; after all, you are not your customer. For example, virtually all products out there are solution-oriented. Thus, if a potential client has a problem, they will proceed to Google and search for words that based on the problem, and not necessarily the solution.

To improve your relevance, you need to listen to your customer more.  Jeff Sommers a Reputation Marketing Specialist has said According to studies by Brightlocal 93% of consumers use online reviews to determine if a local business is good or bad”.  So understand what their problems are and how they express them. Leveraging on this information will give you the insight into the types of keywords you should focus on. And this is what Keyword Research is all about.

3. Keywords and Keyword Research

As mentioned earlier, Keywords are the words or phrases your customers are using every day on Google to find your products and services. Keyword Research is not as easy as it seems and to get the best results; you will need to use special tools designed for this purpose. A host of these tools are readily available on the internet; you only need to check the lot and find the one that best works for you.

Using keyword research tools by yourself is ideal. However, it will most likely get to a stage where you will need the services of an expert. Alternatively, you can outsource this task to a competent brand, who specialises in offering keyword research services. If you ever need such, feel free to reach us at Crocodile Marketing, and we will be glad to help you.

If you want to get started on keyword research on your own, a great tool to work with is Google Search Bar. Perhaps, you think this is a tool you need to download and install? No, it’s not. It is a little trick you can use to your advantage. What the Google Search Bar does is to suggest to you top, relevant keywords. So, when you go to Google, and you type in the word that starts the keyword string, you will see that Google will automatically guess what phrase you are trying to make a query for. And this is a great entry level method of determining the most-searched key-phrases.

This is made possible by Google’s algorithm, which captures the popular phrases people are punching in in the search bar. For instance, if you own a coffee cafe, and you want to see the top keywords for your business, you can type in the word “cafe” and then hit the space bar. The Google bar will show about three to four other phrases under what you have typed. Now, look at these phrases and see if they match your products or services. Do this again and again, by adding an alphabet after space. So, the next round of search will be to type in “cafe,” then hit the space bar to leave a space, and then type in “a.” Note the suggestions and replace the “a” with “b.” You can do this in different variations until you have about 50 key-phrases that you can optimise your website for.

So, there you have them – the top three website SEO tips for beginners. Apply them effectively, and you will be amazed at the results.

Good luck.
